YNBA House League Program - General Inforrmation

The YNBA House League program runs on Saturdays.  There are two sessions: Fall and Spring.

The Fall Season is approx 18 weeks and runs from October to early March. The Spring Season is approx 12 weeks and runs from mid March to June.

Each session starts with an Assessment Day and ends with a Tournament Day.  Teams that go to the finals will receive a medal on tournament day.

Divisions:

YNBA runs the following divisions.  Divisions may be combined if required.
Division Gender Age
Novice Boys and Girls   7,8,9 years
Atom Boys and Girls 10-11 years
Bantam Boys and Girls 12-13 years
Midget Boys 14-15 years
Midget/Juvenile   Girls 14-18 years
Juvenile Boys and Girls 16-18 years

Program Format:
All divisions are 1.5 hours in length. You receive both a practice and a game each week.  The session begins with 45 minutes of skills and drills followed by a 45 minute full court, refereed game of 8 x 4 minute shifts, run time.

All Midget or Juvenile divisions begin with 30 minutes of skills and drills followed by a 1 hour full court, refereed game of 10 x 4 minute shifts, run time.

All games are refereed by YRABO certified referees.

Locations:
YNBA House League is run out of Sacred Heart CHS, Mulock HS, Newmarket HS, Williams HS, Clearmeadow PS, Denison Secondary, and Terry Fox PS.

Gym allocations and times are confirmed once registration is complete.

Registration:
All registrations are done through the Online Registration system and paid by credit card.

See the Registration Policies page for additional information.

Registration Fees cover the cost of school gymnasiums, YRABO certified referees at every game, medals and administration.

As a non-profit organization, the YNBA makes every effort to keep the registration fees as reasonable as possible while delivering the best quality house league program available.  As a Saturday run program, unfortunately gym rentals are significantly more expensive than during the week.  The YNBA will not compromise the game experience by using non-YRABO certified referees.

Financial Assistance:
Financial assistance is available through Canadian Tire Jumpstart. See the Financial Assistance page for additional information.

The YNBA wants every child that wishes to play basketball to have the opportunity to do so.

Jerseys:
YNBA uses a reversible jersey for all players. This jersey is purchased separately (either during the registration process or at the office). The jersey does not change and only has to be purchased as required (first time player or when the player outgrows the jersey). This eliminates stacks of jerseys at home from playing multiple years.

Assessment Day Schedule:
All assessments are done at Newmarket High School on the first day of the season. These assessments are used to create and balance the playing teams. Your team name, coach and schedule will be communicated to you prior to the game the following Saturday.

Tournament Day:
Each session ends with a tournament day. It is a playoff format based on standings from the season games. Each team will play at least one game.

Coaches:
We are always looking for volunteers to coach and convene our program. If you are interested in volunteering, you can indicate this during the registration process or send an email to admin@ynba.ca.

Play Together Requests:
Although we would like to honor play together requests, the need to make fair teams will take precedence.  Player request forms must be filled out by both parties and given to the office for approval.  While the club will make every effort to accommodate each request, the main focus of team-building is to balance teams, and so we cannot guarantee that each play together request will be granted.  If there are extenuating circumstances that “require” the request in order to play, please contact the office prior to registration at admin@ynba.ca

The exception to this is that coaches will coach their own child and we will keep siblings together on the same team if they are in the same division.

Rep Players playing House League:
We strive to have a balance between teams and welcome Rep Players playing House League.  If you son or daughter is playing Rep for us or another organization, they should be registered 1 year older ie. if they're born in 2005, register them in the 2004 age group.

Team Balancing:
We strive to have a balance between teams to the very best of our ability using time-tested methods that work most of the time.  Balancing teams definitely is not a perfect science for many reasons.  The athletes growth factors in size and ability, as well as the team cohesion variable make this an extremely difficult task even for passionate convenors and coaches who have known most of the players for years, and who work diligently together to create balanced teams.

Still we will always strive to do better and we will continue to communicate the importance of this factor to our coaches and convenors.  We are also looking to have coaches give a quick "ability level summary" at the end of all sessions such that the next division convenor has one more tool at their disposal when making teams.
